KC in the Spotlight: Ribs & Indulgent Eating

We’re rounding up the latest headlines about Kansas City, from where to find some of America’s best ribs to which side of the state line has tastier fattening food.

The Daily Meal’s list of “America’s 35 Best Ribs 2016″ included four KC spots. The list of contenders was compiled based on editors’ personal dining experiences, reader recommendations, online reviews and “best of” lists. More than 40 rib experts were then asked to vote on the restaurants compiled, and the 35 featured came out on top.

Gates Bar-B-Q ranked at No. 15, with The Daily Meal noting, “In order to stand out in Kansas City you have to be better than good, and Gates is much better than good.” Jack Stack is just ahead at No. 14 thanks to its assortment of rib options, especially the spare ribs.

Making it to the top 10 was Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que at No. 9, scoring this glowing write-up: “These ribs are postcard-picture-perfect, and you’ll most likely find yourself snapping a photo of them before you even take that first bite. But once you do, you’ll learn what the fuss has been about.”

Arthur Bryant’s rounds out the KC contenders at No. 5, with The Daily Meal giving props for the high-quality hickory and fruit wood used in smoking and calling the restaurant’s ribs slathered in sauce “the stuff dreams are made of.”

Meanwhile, it’s a mixed bag (depending on how you look at it) for Kansas Citians, according to Thrillist’s “Ranking All 50 States, By How Fun They Are to Get Fat In.”

Kansas comes in at No. 37, with the presence of Joe’s Kansas City propelling it toward the “fun” designation and the absence of White Castle locations counting against it. Missouri ranks higher at No. 11, with the writer remarking, “You simply have to respect a state where the all-fat part of the brisket is showcased as a meal in and of itself and frozen custard is considered a light in-between-meal snack.”
