The American Transitions to Pop-Up Concept

Big changes are coming to The American.

The American Restaurant will become a pop-up dining experience and special events venue in 2017.

Crown Center also announced Executive Chef Michael Corvino will leave the iconic Kansas City restaurant in August. Corvino took the reins of the restaurant in 2013 as it was celebrating its 40th year.

“During his tenure with The American, Executive Chef Michael Corvino upheld the restaurant’s exceptional reputation and enhanced our culinary offerings,” said Crown Center President Stacey Paine in a statement. “We wish Michael much success and thank him for his contributions.”

The American will continue to accept reservations and serve its seasonally changing, carefully constructed tasting menus and inventive cuisine through the end of 2016. Next year, the restaurant atop Crown Center will welcome guest chefs for exclusive engagements.

“The decision to reimagine The American Restaurant is consistent with our ongoing efforts to attract future generations to Crown Center,” Paine said. “In recent years, we have invested millions of dollars in new attractions, new retail stores and restaurants, and a wide array of festivals and events on our campus. We’re excited to introduce new patrons to this incredible dining space and offer an array of experiences to meet the evolving taste of today’s diners.”

The venue will also be available for weddings, parties and other private events throughout the year.

Conceived in part by culinary legend James Beard, The American has been recognized often for its innovative, contemporary cuisine and downtown views. The restaurant has also been home to celebrated chefs such as James Beard Award winners Debbie Gold, Michael Smith and Celina Tio and recent nominee Pastry Chef Nick Wesemann.
