Michael Smith Celebrates 9 Years, Adds Valet Service

Michael Smith hosts a four-course anniversary dinner and introduces weekend valet parking.

The crew at Michael Smith knows how to celebrate a birthday. In honor of its ninth anniversary, the restaurant will host a reservations-only dinner July 14.

The four-course meal ($125 per person plus tax and gratuity) will include a reception with champagne and a raw bar of Russian Osetra caviar, oysters, clams, king crab and shrimp and continue with a summer beefsteak tomato salad; pancetta and lobster rigatoni; and filet mignon and Maine lobster tail. The finale will feature Smith’s homemade raspberry-peach pie with vanilla ice cream, and each course will be highlighted with a wine pairing.

The James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Smith moved into 1900 Main Street in 2007 with his eponymous restaurant and later its next-door neighbor Extra Virgin, both helmed by the chef and his wife, General Manager/Wine Director Nancy Smith.

“This dinner is a celebration of being in the heart of Kansas City’s cultural crossroads,” Michael Smith says. “I’m proud not only of the role our restaurants have played in the development of the ascending culinary landscape in Kansas City, but also of the Crossroads area, which is now full of life. Nancy and I, along with our team, are honored to mark this anniversary with our loyal customers and friends.”

Chef Howard Hanna of The Rieger Hotel Grill & Exchange, who previously worked at Smith’s 40 Sardines, says Michael Smith moved to the Crossroads during an important time for the district.

“Michael Smith and Extra Virgin are great neighbors of The Rieger and I don’t think places like The Rieger could have taken off so well or easily without Michael bringing his concepts here and doing great things,” Hanna says.

Beyond the anniversary dinner, Michael Smith cooked up another reason to stop by. The restaurant and Extra Virgin now offer $5 valet service Friday and Saturday nights for those who want to avoid the hassle of parking in the Crossroads—and the KC Streetcar stops next to the restaurant for those who don’t want to drive at all.
