Forget what the calendar or thermostat says: The true indication summer is on the way is Murray’s Homemade Ice Creams & Cookies opening for the season, and today is the day. Check the Westport favorite’s Facebook page to see what flavors are available, as they change regularly.
Another highly anticipated opening is also happening today: Meshuggah Bagels starts serving up its authentic New York-style specialty on 39th Street. Sample the offerings 6:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday or 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Kansas City Repertory Theatre dazzles with not one but two shows this weekend. “Roof of the World” follows a British explorer and an Indian spy in disguise as they travel into uncharted territory now through March 27. This evening also marks the opening of “The Fantasticks,” the longest running off-Broadway musical in history, which tells the story of a boy and girl whose fathers hatch a plan to bring them together. The show runs through April 10.
Watch your back, New York, Paris, London and Milan: Kansas City Fashion Week continues to make waves with its latest season. Catch runway shows at Union Station Friday and Saturday night for a glimpse of styles from local and regional fashion and accessories designers such as Laura McGrew (Tomboy Design Studio), Erin Paige and “Project Runway” alum Michael Drummond.
The Kansas City Symphony gets a dose of “Glee” from the show’s star, Matthew Morrison. The Emmy, Golden Globe and Tony-nominated performer is in town for one night only singing Broadway hits from his latest album as well as Sinatra standards.
Those with musical aspirations of their own are invited to try out for this season’s Theatre in the Park shows. Productions include “Cabaret,” “The Drowsy Chaperone,” “A Chorus Line,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “Mary Poppins.” People of all ages are invited to show what they’ve got at auditions March 19 and 26 at Blue Valley High School. Home improvement projects calling your name? At the Greater Kansas City Home Show happening this weekend at the Kansas City Convention Center, you’ll find everything from inspiration to vendors to celebrity speakers, including Joanna and Chip Gaines of HGTV’s “Fixer Upper.” The Texas couple will present on the main stage Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at noon.
Nearby, runners will be flocking to Kemper Arena for the Great Plains 10K. The flat and fast course (perfect for setting your new personal record) will take participants through the West Bottoms, down Southwest Boulevard, through the Freight House District and back to Kemper Arena.
Enjoy an afternoon at the opera and catch the final performance of Lyric Opera of Kansas City’s “The Elixir of Love” at 2 p.m. A love triangle gets kicked up a notch by the presence of a snake oil salesman (and wine), giving the tale its charm and humor. Orchestra tickets start at $59.
