KC Jazz ALIVE Celebrates Charlie Parker

Kansas City fêtes legend Charlie Parker with a host of performances and events.

For 10-days Kansas City sounds a little sweeter courtesy of KC Jazz ALIVE’s 2nd Annual Charlie Parker Celebration. Aug. 20 – 29, the event recognizes one of the world’s most influential jazz performers and a native of KC.

The Bird’s legacy lives on with performances from Shades of Jade, Lonnie McFadden, Stan Kessler, Hermon Mehari and many others at venues including the Blue Room, 12 Baltimore at Hotel Phillips, the Gem Theater, Green Lady, Café Trio and the Majestic.

Other highlights include an extension of the American Jazz Museum’s Charlie Parker Permanent Exhibition showcasing dozens of rare Parker artifacts opening Thursday, Aug. 20 along with a panel discussion exploring the musician’s influence on musical and scholarly output at 9 a.m., a historical tour of places that played a significant role in Parker’s life and development 3 – 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22 and a musical salute at the legend’s gravesite led by 2015 Charlie Parker Celebration Artist in Residence, Clay Jenkins. See the entire schedule at kcjazzalive.org.
