KC Magazine City’s Best 2015: People

A city is only as good as the people who live there—and we love these folks who complete us.

BEST PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE:

ERIC HOSMER

You know you’ve made it when you have a haircut named after you. The Hos, a modified Mohawk, has become a favorite request throughout KC, a nod to Eric Hosmer’s skyrocketing popularity as Kansas City Royals first baseman. In between making superstar plays and doing good for Big Brothers Big Sisters Greater Kansas City, Hosmer is testing out other talents like acting. He recently had a cameo in an HBO series, the aptly named “Ballers.”

BEST SPORTS TEAM:

KANSAS CITY ROYALS

In Crown Town, there’s no doubting that the Royals are kings. After years of less-than-stellar play, the Royals won the American League Championship last year and were this close to winning the World Series. This season is proving to be even better, thanks to a talented team that generates an infectious on-field energy—not to mention some truly astounding plays. You can’t help but love these guys—and it’s clear they love Kansas City right back.

2nd Place: Sporting KC  |  3rd Place: Kansas City Chiefs

BEST TV SHOW HOST:

JOEL NICHOLS

Joel Nichols first made a name for himself in the Kansas City TV market as an on-air meteorologist, and has since expanded his resume to include co-host of weekday show “Kansas City Live.” His relaxed, approachable interviewing style is fun to watch—and it’s one of many reasons he’s at the top of the best TV show host list. Oh, and he’s really entertaining on Twitter, too. Give him a follow at @joekclive.

2nd Place: Michelle Davidson  |  3rd Place: Gary Lezak

BEST POWER COUPLE:

VINCE AND CINDY JOHNSTON

When Vince and Cindy Johnston aren’t working at Sopra Salon and Spa, which they co-founded in October of 2004, there’s a good chance they’re making the community around them a better place. The couple is passionate about giving back in a number of ways, including serving as chairpersons for the Kansas City Wine Opener, benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Given their dedication to their business and their community, it’s no surprise that they named the salon “Sopra,” which means “above all else.”

2nd Place: Steve Smirnes and Shannon Willis  |  3rd Place: Michael and Nancy Smith

BEST RADIO PERSONALITY:

LAZLO, 96.5 THE BUZZ

Lazlo, afternoon drive host on 96.5 The Buzz, is no stranger to pushing the envelope and is fluent in snark. It’s no wonder that large numbers of Kansas City radio listeners opt to worship at The Church of Lazlo, his cheekily named show that’s on from 3 to 7 p.m., as a result. If you’re stuck in rush hour traffic (or counting down the last minutes of the workday), why not spend the time listening to Lazlo and cracking up? We’re sure he’d agree.

2nd Place: Afentra, 96.5 The Buzz  |  3rd Place: Johnny Dare, 98.9 The Rock

BEST LOCAL TO INVITE TO LUNCH:

MAYOR SLY JAMES

If you’re feeling a little frosty, don’t adjust the thermostat—it’s probably because Kansas City Mayor Sly James is nearby. Thanks to a mix of approachability—frosty is his way of saying ‘stay cool’—genuineness and a palpable passion for making Kansas City a better place, Sly James has transcended his political office to become one of the most beloved local leaders in history. And, honestly—does anyone look better in a bowtie than Mayor Sly?
