This weekend might be all about mothers, but it could also be about bringing home a new member of the family to shower with love. Great Plains SPCA is holding a Homeward Bound adoption special, and Friday through Sunday all pets, including puppies and kittens, are only $30. KC Pet Project is also offering a Mother’s Day weekend deal—all pets that have been at the shelter for 30 days or longer are $30 Saturday and Sunday.

If your jewelry collection is in need of an update, head to Tivol at Hawthorne Plaza today or the Country Club Plaza store Saturday. Designer Penny Preville will be there showing off her latest collections, including these gorgeous celestial-inspired pieces we love. Mazzarese is also hosting a celebrity designer Friday and Saturday. Todd Reed will be on hand to show off his stunning couture pieces, made using raw diamonds.

For a locally made jewelry fix, check out designer and metalsmith Susan Mahlstedt’s captivating creations at Tallulahbelle’s this evening from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. While you’re in the store, consider picking up a last-minute gift for Mom.

Science and philosophy converge in “Planetary,” a documentary about how humans are connected to one and other as well as the planet being screened tonight at The Folly Theater by local organization A Great Collaboration. Stick around after the film for a panel with the filmmakers and an astronaut as well as mixed media performance by Barclay Martin.

Get hog wild at Kansas City Bier Company’s Biergarten Hog Roast 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Local Pig will be smoking an entire pig and KC Bier Co. is tapping a Bavarian barrel at 1 p.m. Live music runs 2 – 9 p.m. with The John Brown Boys headlining the evening.

You’ve done First Fridays and now Third Thursdays and Fridays, but what about Second Saturdays? Head to Weston today for an Art Walk where visitors are invited to create chalk masterpieces on the sidewalks, take in street art and entertainment and check out art in stores while enjoying food and drink tastings throughout the day.

Happy Mother’s Day! We hope you already made a reservation for a special dinner or brunch, but if you want to do something special at home, our entertaining experts Lon Lane and Stewart Lane have amazing ideas for throwing a vintage-inspired brunch. After eating, take your leading lady to one of the many Mom-centric events around town, such as Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art’s Mother’s Day Celebration, or get free admission to the Kansas City Zoo, where mothers will find special treats and can see all the adorable mom and baby animals.

If the weather cooperates, start your day with Yoga Rocks the Park’s free class kicking of the 2015 season this morning at Liberty Memorial. The music-filled outdoor session is perfect for yogi moms or fitness aficionados looking to take their downward dog outside for some fresh air.

City Market is already the place to be weekend mornings if you’re looking for fresh local food and goods, but this weekend there’s a little extra incentive to come out. The KC Urban Potters and six guest potters will be selling their handcrafted wares 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. See them in action during demonstrations Saturday, which also marks the debut of the City Market Park yoga series, happening at 9 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month this season.

Check back next week for info on more events you won’t want to miss!
