Night at the Museum

While there’s nothing wrong with being first, these days we’re pretty excited about third—Third Thursdays and Fridays, that is.

Ever since Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art launched its monthly Third Thursday events in November, we’ve been looking forward to a new day of the week. It might not mean the weekend is here, but a night at the museum provides the boost we need to power through Friday.

This month’s theme is Soul + Food, and you’ll find music from soul queens Charlotte Embry and Soigné, a beer tasting with North KC’s Big Rip Brewing Company and tasty samples from Magnolia’s Shanita McAfee and Wilma’s Real Good Food truck’s Brett Atkinson as well as a drop-in art activity and a soulful happy hour menu created by a JCCC culinary student.

The Nelson doesn’t have the monopoly on artful Thursday entertainment. Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art hosts visiting artist in the Hudson Auditorium on Third Thursdays. This month, presenting artists are Jill Downen and Hong Chun Zhang.

Fridays have also gotten in on the fun: Local Life’s Third Fridays have become tradition in downtown Overland Park, where businesses mark the occasion with discounts, samples, music and other specials, and East Bottoms favorite Urban Provisions General Store attracts crowds to its monthly pop-up markets. April 17 you can catch Happy Gillis owners Josh and Abbey-Jo Eans selling ramen (their Kickstarter campaign to open Columbus Park Ramen Shop has just a few days left) alongside locally made apothecary goods, crafts and jewelry.
