Lon and Marcia Lane, Lon Lane’s Inspired Occasions
The husband-and-wife catering powerhouse of Lon and Marcia Lane met decades ago in Little Rock, Arkansas. During the couple’s first date, he ordered a plate of Blue Point oysters for her—something for which Marcia hadn’t yet acquired a taste.
“He was gracious and we switched appetizers,” she says. “I’ve since become an oyster fan.”
Their second date was a 3 a.m. feast of eggs Benedict and Champagne.
“I was impressed,” Marcia says. “I wasn’t a foodie back then, and I thought, ‘This is cool.’”
Fast-forward 38 years and the Lanes’ reputation for sophisticated, adventurous palates is legendary in Kansas City. They are inspired by fresh, creative cuisine—“classic with a twist,” explains Lon. “And presentation is a driver in everything we create and eat.”
When the Lanes aren’t serving some of the city’s most high-profile business, philanthropic and civic leaders and entrepreneurs, they steal away to date night at Story. Lon can always count on Chef/Owner Carl Thorne-Thomsen for a tasty surprise.
“Although Marcia orders, I always tell the server to ask Carl to send me whatever he wants to,” Lon says. “Love that element of mystery—and it’s always fabulous.”
Local flavor is an essential ingredient in the Lane’s continued success.
“Many of our clients want to know where we eat when we go out,” says Marcia. “It’s easy to recommend the local chefs and restaurateurs—we have so much respect for them, and value the sense of community here around food.”
“Supporting local definitely helps keep us on top of our game,” agrees Lon.

Off the menu. “Wherever we go, I ask for the chef’s best,” says Lon. “Recently at Story, Carl prepared a phenomenal skate and a ceviche that was off the charts.”
