Move over, coffee! Hot chocolate is in season and we know the best places in Kansas City to find it
Story by Alex Sher
In the streets of New York City, fashionistas are toting around their new favorite accessory: a cup of high-quality hot chocolate. The same sinfully decadent comfort-in-a-cup craze is taking over Kansas City too, but we don’t have to pay $9 for a cup of the good stuff here. We searched high and low for the best hot chocolates in the city, and here are our top three:
Christopher Elbow Hot Chocolate
Christopher Elbow Artisan Chocolates has provided KC with high-quality chocolate for years. The chocolatier’s salted caramels and decadent chocolate bars are adored by locals, and his drinking chocolate is no different. Recognized by “Travel and Leisure” as one of the best hot chocolates in America, Christopher Elbow drinking chocolates ($16 for 12 oz.) are available in Cocoa Noir, a ground chocolate blended with Tahitian vanilla bean, and Venezuelan spice, dark chocolate mixed with an ancho and chipotle chili-cinnamon blend for added heat to keep you warm all winter long.
The Roasterie Chocolate Flavored Coffee
When it comes to coffee, Kansas Citians know they can trust The Roasterie. Combining some of the best coffee and chocolate in the city, The Roasterie’s Christopher Elbow Chocolate Flavored Coffee ($14.65 for 12 oz.) delights any coffee lover with a sweet tooth. Those who prefer something without espresso can try the creamy hot chocolate (available in four sizes, starting at $1.99), made in-store with steamed Shatto chocolate milk and topped with a generous dollop of whipped cream and chocolate drizzle.
Andre’s Hot Chocolate Mixes
Smooth and creamy, Andre’s hot chocolate mix ($17.50 for 12 oz.) melts right into hot milk or water for the perfect mix of chocolaty goodness at home. It can be purchased in bulk to make 8-15cups, depending on the strength of the hot chocolate. Play it safe with the signature blend or keep your taste buds on their toes with the ginger spice mix. Andre’s hot chocolate is also served in-house, where it’s made with steamed whole milk and topped with a generous portion of fresh whipped cream.
Parisi Artisan Coffee
Parisi is one of our go-to spots for coffee thanks to its always-delicious lineup of seasonal drinks (peppermint mochas and gingersnap and eggnog lattes are currently featured). Turns out its hot chocolate is just as good. Made with a rich house-made cocoa sauce and steamed milk, Parisi’s cocoa is a tasty but not too sweet take on the classic cold weather beverage.
