The variety of projects submitted for this year’s Design Excellence Awards not only reflect Kansas City’s impressive design talent, it celebrates our town’s wide-ranging lifestyles.
Styles range from a sleek downtown loft to a 1920s Sunset Hills Italianate masterpiece, homes that make the most of lake views and treetops, or embrace the charms of a Brookside or Old Leawood neighborhoods while adding modern conveniences in clever ways.
From exciting new builds to stunning renovations, the design firms and individuals whose work is reflected in these pages earned accolades from our panel of judges based first on the integrity of the artistry and architecture. The judges also took into account the challenges that were overcome with great success. One example is a client who wanted to incorporate not only a wonderful collection of artwork into a new home, but also a way to showcase several massive slabs of granite. The result is sensational.
Our thanks to the designers who put their hearts and souls into these projects and for sharing them with us for this year’s awards. Kudos also go to our judges tasked with making tough choices when faced with dozens of deserving entries: Arlene Ladegaard from Design Connection, Inc.; Amanda Bauer from KDR Showrooms; and Kathleen Ramsey from Ramsey Interiors.
We’re honored to feature the winning projects in the following pages, and to hand out the awards at our luncheon at The Gallery Event Space in the Power & Light District on Friday, August 22.
