Top 10 Reasons to Clear Your Calendar for August 21

Our friends at Think Big Partners put together a list of reasons to clear your calendar for one of KC’s top entrepreneurial events happening later this month.

Have you purchased your tickets to iKC yet? You should.

 1. Stir up inspiration.

Unless you sit in the parking lot of Union Station, you won’t be able to avoid new ideas at iKC. The Unconference format lends to brainstorming and creative problem solving, so our hope is that a few of these ideas will inspire you to do more and be more in your own business. Keep your mind open throughout the day and who knows? Maybe you’ll leave with a fresh new perspective.

2. Talk about the tough topics.

Unlike a lot of pre-planned conferences, you don’t get a lot of say in the topics speakers choose, which means they tell you what they want to tell you, not what you want to hear. The Unconference is your chance to interact with other Kansas City entrepreneurs, innovators and investors and ask questions you wished you knew the answers to. Don’t be shy! Submit the topic ideas that you want to discuss at iKC.

3. Learn from the experiences of VegasTechFund Partner, Andy White.

Apart from his role as partner at the VegasTechFund, iKC keynote speaker, Andy White has also held the position of executive director at BoomStartup and has been a leading force in the Downtown Project of Las Vegas. From these experiences, White has learned what it takes to grow a startup community. During his keynote address of “The City as a Startup,” he will share how KC can implement startup methodology within communities to create an ecosystem where technology and innovation can thrive.

4. View your business through the lens of other types of businesses,

At The Unconference, you’ll hear ideas and challenges outside your own industry, and you’re sure to discover new applications within yours. When people share and open up about their own challenges and how they solved them, this information is golden. Lock it in and learn from it. Things that work for different businesses may just work for yours and help you differentiate from the competition.

5. Get one-on-one mentoring with some of KC’s most respected entrepreneurs and business leaders,

Are you an entrepreneur looking for feedback or mentorship? We’ve lined up some of the city’s most successful entrepreneurs and business leaders for the UnMentor Program. Apply for the UnMentor Program and you may have an opportunity for a 20-minute session with one of our UnMentors during iKC. To apply for the UnMentor Program, simply select “yes” when registering for your iKC 2014 ticket. iKC organizers will follow up with an application.

6.  Relax, recharge and have fun.

Sometimes work can feel like…well, work. If you’ve been missing out on the fun and fulfillment of being an entrepreneur, maybe you’re in need of a recharge. We encourage you to tap into your creativity and have fun during the day. If the session is light and full of laughter and enjoyment, odds are people will be more relaxed and you may get more out of it. There is nothing like being in a room of like-minded people to reignite your passion.

7. Make better connections and partnerships.

Something magical happens when people get together and get honest. Barriers come down, connections are made and relationships grow. Meeting people from your entrepreneurial community is not only inspiring, it also creates an opportunity to build potential business partnerships and other collaborative connections.

8. Gather for the KCSourceLink State of Entrepreneurship Address.

After a day filled with conversations and collisions, iKC attendees will gather together for the State of Entrepreneurship Address. During the address, KCSourceLink will present the first annual “Making Kansas City America’s Most Entrepreneurial City” report, aimed at illustrating the impact of Kansas City entrepreneurship. The knowledge of our progress will help you put your ideas discussed during The Unconference into action.

9. Unwind with Drinks, Apps and Networking.

What’s a closing reception without drinks, apps and networking? You’ll work up a thirst and appetite during iKC: the Unconference, so be sure to join us in the Sprint Festival Plaza for refreshments and networking from 4:45-6:00 PM.

10. Continue the Celebration at the Silicon Prairie Awards.

After The Unconference, join us just a few blocks away at the Arvest Bank at the Midland Theatre to celebrate the companies and individuals who are advancing the region’s startup community at the Silicon Prairie Awards. Be sure to vote for your favorite companies in advance!
