Great for transitioning from work to happy hour, these sleek ponytails are simple yet chic.
We hung out with Parlor Beauty Bar’s hair stylist Caylee Gutting and model Lauren Price, who gave us a step-by-step tutorial on how to create two different sophisticated ponytails.
You will need:
- 1 elastic
- 2 bobby pins
- Teasing comb
- Texturizing spray (we suggest Sachajuan Ocean Mist)
- Dry shampoo or volume powder
- Fine-tooth comb
- 1-inch barrel curling iron *optional
The Lady-Like Low Pony
Spritz texturizing spray evenly throughout hair to give it a good grip to work with. Add volume powder or dry shampoo to your scalp to absorb oils if your hair is dirty or add volume if it’s clean. Tease the crown to give your hair a nice shape and prevent it from falling flat. (*Parlor tip: Use a 1-inch barrel curling iron to curl the ends of your hair for a little extra movement and bounce.)
Pull all your hair back with an elastic. Use lightweight hairspray to pull back any fly-aways. Take a piece of hair from the under side of the ponytail and wrap it around the ponytail to hide the elastic. Secure with a bobby pin. (*Parlor tip: Pull a few pieces from the sides out lightly to give it a messy look.)
The Pumped-Up Pony
If you’re feeling a little more outgoing, take note of the Barbie silhouette and try a high ponytail to keep your hair out of your way and looking fresh.
Tease your hair throughout the crown. Smooth back hair with a comb. Spray with lightweight hairspray. (Parlor Tip: Take your comb and hold it up to your cheekbone. Where the end of the comb hits on the head is the best place to put your high ponytail.)
Pull back hair and seal it with an elastic. Take a piece of hair from the under side of the ponytail and wrap it around the ponytail to hide the elastic. Secure with a bobby pin. (*Parlor Tip: If you want more lift, take a fine-tooth comb and use the end to gently lift hair at the crown.) Spray any unwanted fly-aways. For a fuller ponytail, separate pieces and use comb to lightly tease the hair.
