What started as a fierce yet friendly competition between local bartenders eight years ago has grown into the weeklong Paris of the Plains Cocktail Festival.
Events includes seminars, social hours and a Midwest mixologists’ melee (on August 21 at Dark Horse Distillery) and culminates in the boozy battle at the Uptown Theater on August 24. While most of the classes are geared toward professionals upping their skills, a few cater to enthusiasts, and everyone’s invited to the Big Band Tribute to KC Jazz at The Kill Devil Club on August 22.
A few other events to put on your schedule include “On The Town” at The American on August 20, a tribute to the Rainbow Room where James Beard Award-winning mixologist and author Dale DeGroff will discuss the history of bar life in America accompanied by chef Michael Corvino’s interpretation of the NY restaurant’s menu. Head back to The American on August 23 for WINEtails, a 5-course dinner with creative wine cocktails prepared by Doug Frost, Andy Seymour, Lulu Martinez and Paige Unger.
You can also get a history lesson on how KC earned that “Paris of the Plains” nickname on August 23, as local historians discuss the city’s raunchy past over cocktails.
