The Head for the Cure Race helps raise money for brain cancer research while the Neon Dash offers a colorful time.
Building on last year’s record turnout of 5,000 participants— and bringing in $400,000—the 12th Annual Head for the Cure 5K road race supports the Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative in the quest to eradicate brain cancer. Registration is $30 through August 21; $35 on Sunday, the day of the race. Bring your family or join a team for discounts. Enjoy a relatively easy course along beautiful Corporate Woods (near Building 40) in Overland Park. Practice by racing to register at headforthecure.org.
Join the Kansas City version of the race that’s sweeping the country faster than a kitten video on YouTube—the Neon Dash! This nighttime 5K fun run at Kemper Arena Saturday adds the “color commentary” as participants cross four Glow Zones that cover you in neon colors. Then head to the After Dash Bash with food, drinks and music where black lights illuminate the artwork. This is one runner’s bib you might want to frame. Open to all ages, crazy costumes encouraged. Gates open at 6 p.m., race begins at 8 p.m. $30 entrance fee through August 22; $40 afterwards. Get your glow on at neondash.com, and watch for details about an early materials pick-up event.
