2014 KC Magazine City’s Best Awards: Fashion & Beauty

Best Fashion Designer: Matt Baldwin

The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising grad made his mark on KC’s fashion scene in 2003, when he and wife Emily opened the first location of Standard Style. Within a few years, he was using his skills to create his own garments, focusing on denim goods. He’s since been dubbed the “high priest of low-key gear” by GQ, and his jeans have been endorsed by the likes of Vanity Fair and Jay-Z.

2nd Place: Wendy McMillian, WM Couture  |  3rd Place: Aurelien Collin, AC78

Best Women’s Fashion: Halls

It’s been bringing fresh-from-the-runway collections from high-end designers to Kansas City for just shy of 100 years, and now the department store is poised to take its iconic status to a new level. Its newest incarnation, Halls on Grand, celebrating its grand opening this month, offers new departments and new features, such as an in-store bar and café, which are certain to wow shoppers.

Best Men’s Fashion: Baldwin

GQ magazine has called it one of the best men’s stores in the country, so it’s little surprise our readers voted Baldwin their favorite in KC. The two locations (at Country Club Plaza and Town Center Crossing) offer top-of-the-line U.S.-made denim and more from local designer Matt Baldwin as well as a selective array of clothing and accessories from other designers who meld well with the brand’s ethos.

Best Nail Salon: Hoopla

This chic little Fairway salon puts superior manis and pedis at Kansas Citians’ fingertips. Standard nail services use Hoopla’s own brand of toxin-free polishes and include a complimentary mini-bottle of your chosen hue to take home for touch-ups. No wonder you gave it a perfectly polished thumbs-up.

2nd Place: Bijin Salon and Spa  |  3rd Place: Voga Salon

Best Pamper-Yourself Day Spa: Bijin Salon and Spa

Whether they go in for something to improve their appearance, such as a facial or blowout, something to improve their state of mind, like a full-body massage, or a treatment that does both, clients leave this Prairie Village favorite more than satisfied.

Best Place to Find a Wedding Gown: Altar Bridal

For many brides, the moment they find The Dress is almost on a par with their most treasured memories from The Big Day itself. Customers of this boutique, which recently relocated to Park Place, fall in love with its swoon-worthy selection of gowns from designers such as Monique Lhuillier, Carol Hannah and Lula Kate, as well as the exemplary customer service it offers.

2nd Place: Gown Gallery  |  3rd Place: Bridal Extraordinaire

Best Med Spa: AesthetiCare MedSpa

A list of services that includes nearly every non-surgical aesthetic treatment available anywhere in the country, access to the latest and most advanced equipment and products, and an educated, experienced staff are just some of the reasons this Leawood facility—and its clients—are so attractive.

Best Cosmetic Surgeon: Dr. John Quinn, Quinn Plastic Surgery Center

The affable doctor is best known for his “mommy makeovers,” combinations of breast lift, tummy tuck and liposuction procedures designed to reverse the toll pregnancy and breastfeeding can take on women’s bodies.
