Love a caffeine boost but don’t relish the thought of sipping on a steaming hot cup of joe when it’s already steaming hot outside? Forget those uber-sweet artificially flavored frozen coffee drinks—our new favorite way to chill is the Toddy. The concentrated coffee drink, named for the Toddy cold-brew system ($34.95, available in Kaldi’s locations or online), has been showing up on the menu boards at the coolest coffee spots in town. We asked Kaldi’s Wyatt Johnson, lead barista at the Jefferson Street location on the Country Club Plaza, to share a few recipes. Crisp Bourbon Toddy
1 oz bourbon of your choice
2 oz uncut (raw) Toddy
1 oz ginger/lemon simple syrup (recipe follows)
Ginger/Lemon Simple Syrup
Zest of 2 lemons
Juice of 2 lemons
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 inch of fresh ginger root
Bring all syrup ingredients to a boil and boil for 5 minutes. Cool and strain. To make the cocktail, pour the bourbon, Toddy and 1 oz of the syrup into a cocktail shaker, add ice, shake and serve.
Honey Almond Toddy
8oz Toddy iced coffee (made with one part Toddy and one part water)
3/4 oz honey simple syrup
2oz Almond Milk
To make the honey simple syrup, heat (but do not boil) 1 cup honey and 1 cup water in a saucepan until combined. Let cool. To make the drink, pour all Toddy ingredients into a shaker, shake and serve.
