Spanish-born interior designer Alejandro Lopez moved to Kansas City from Miami in 2010 and quickly became the go-to for locals seeking to bring contemporary European design into their homes. Lopez and his brother, Gerardo, opened Alejandro Home Design in the Crossroads Arts District in 2012. The space serves as Lopez’s design studio and a showroom for the exclusive home furnishing collections he carries, including his own Alejandro Home Couture line. It’s also a fabulous place to find unique modern home decor accessories.

Q. How would you describe your style?

Alejandro Lopez. My style is European—to say it simply, it’s contemporary, luxurious and functional. When I work with a client, I apply those three concepts in order to create the unique design for the client. I take time to get to know my clients. It’s important that I translate their ideas and dreams into reality. I feel that the design of the project represents the unique personality of the client. I create a total concept for the project, and every single detail is important. When absorbed in a project, I’m totally immersed in it, constantly thinking of what to do to make sure everything flows, is cohesive and unifying.

Q. Where do you find inspiration?

A. I almost channel Coco Chanel, who said, “Fashion is everywhere. Just look around you.” I feel the same way about my design inspiration. Anything can inspire me: a color, a pattern, an old building. Design is everywhere – just take the time to look

Q. What made you decide to create the Alejandro Home Couture collection?

A. I felt that there was a need to fill. My designs are custom made in the United States. I wanted my clients to have one-of-a-kind beautiful pieces in their homes—not something that can be purchased from a big box store where there are literally thousands of the same things. That is why I use Spanish ceramic tile, French fabrics, wall covering from New Zealand and Italian leathers in producing the Alejandro Home Couture collection. The pillow collection that I launched last year is manufactured here in Kansas City. I believe in supporting the local business as much as possible. The couture furniture pieces are individually handmade in either Kansas City or Miami and are limited editions.

Q. What are some of your favorite exclusive lines or collections right now?

A. Besides my own line, we are exclusive dealers of Calligaris, a modern furniture line that is produced entirely in Italy, and Janus et Cie, a French outdoor furniture line. Some fabric collections I love are Holly Hunt, Pierre Frey and Scalamandré.

Q. Any tricks for making a big impact in a room with a minimal amount of effort?

A. In my design, nothing is minimal or without an effort. Every surface requires thought, whether I custom blend a special paint color or select a wall covering. I’ll tell you a classic trick though: In little rooms, surprise people with oversized custom furniture, a wall covering with a huge, bold pattern, or paint the entire room in one color, including the ceiling.
