Underdog Wine Plans April Fools’ Day Opening

No joke: Ryan Sciara’s new Crestwood Shops spot is coming soon.

Grape guru Sciara is kicking April off with the opening of Underdog Wine Co. at 9:30 a.m. The shop’s shelves will be stocked with small production wines, artisan spirits and American craft beer as well as drinks aimed at tasters with a cultivated conscience.

These days, most of us are paying more attention to how the foods that end up on our dinner tables are produced—from avoiding certain potentially harmful additives to insisting on totally organic products. But what about the wine that’s served with that meal? We asked Sciara to choose some favorites from the “green” wines he stocks.

Bodegas Juan Gil “Honoro Vera” Organic Monastrell (Spain, $10)

“This Monastrell (a.k.a. Mourvèdre) is dark, dense and brooding. Savory aromas of thyme, cinnamon and clove, with a rich palate of blackberry, black plum, smoke and vanilla.”

Maysara “Arsheen” Pinot Gris (Oregon, $18)

“Bright, fresh and clean, with orange peel, pear and apricot aromas. A plump and juicy wine with a crisp and racy finish.”

Domaine de Cristia Chateauneuf du Pape (France, $40)

“Beautiful, fleshy and concentrated. Seductive bouquet of kirsch, black licorice and incense. Full bodied with a rich palate of black cherry, raspberry, dried plum and herbs.”
