Tara Light Creates a Fashionable Fable in the Crossroads

The Crossroads area is a mecca for Kansas City’s hip, creative crowd, so it’s no wonder local designer Tara Light chose it as the location for her new womenswear and accessories shop.

Tara Light’s new fashion boutique, Fable, is scheduled to open mid-April at 1515 Walnut St. The shop will be stocked with items from “emerging American designers who focus on quality, sustainability and rarity,” Light says, adding that everything Fable offers will either be made in America or by fair-trade standards. The label lineup currently includes Samantha Pleet, Ilana Kohn, Feral Childe and Imogene + Willie, among many others.

And of course Fable will also offer the latest collections by Tara Light, who got her first big break as a designer in the West 18th Street Fashion Show just a few years ago. After that, Light continued to develop her skills and style, eventually leaving her job to explore design full-time.

When she was introduced to Jay Tomlinson of Helix Architecture + Design, who renovated the shop space, “that pretty much made it impossible for me to say no to opening a shop in the Crossroads,” Light says. “Right in the neighborhood where it all began.”

If you’re in the Crossroads for May’s First Friday event, plan to stop in for Fable’s grand opening party.
