March 7 – April 12, Belger Crane Yard Studios
Artist Roger Shimomura’s work has been displayed across the country, but the distinguished professor emeritus at the University of Kansas returns to KC this week with an exhibition at Belger Crane Yard Studios.
The show surveys over 25 years of Shimomura’s lithographs, including recent collaborations with Michael Sims, his former colleague at KU who went on to found The Lawrence Lithography Workshop.
Although the renowned artist’s prints are filled with montages, pop art and comic book-style characters that might seem lighthearted, his work actually serves a deeper purpose—addressing issues of identity and stereotypes influenced by the two years he and his family spent in an internment camp for Japanese Americans during World War II.
See his inspired creations at the exhibition’s First Friday Welcome Reception on Friday, March 7.
