It’s not just a name: There really is a mama behind Mama Resch’s gluten-free bakery in Overland Park. Owner Angela Resch started inventing recipes when her oldest son was diagnosed with a range of severe food allergies and she couldn’t find safe and delicious snacks for him. Along with a wide range of sweet treats, including cookies, cupcakes and doughnuts, Mama Resch’s also offers fresh-baked breads, buns and pizza crusts. Planning a party? Oh la la! The charming Chez Elle in Kansas City’s West Side neighborhood offers more than two dozen types of crepes, all available in gluten-free versions. Indulge your sweet tooth with a celiac-friendly crepe filled with Nutella and bananas, lemon curd and strawberries or orange marmalade. If you’re in the mood for something savory, we love the “Le Jardin,” which is served stuffed with spinach, artichokes, sautéed mushrooms and caramelized onions.

Not everything on Mud Pie Vegan Bakery and Coffeehouse’s menu is gluten-free, but those with celiac will certainly have plenty of choices. The GF scones, brownies, cookies and zucchini bread are all delish, but our favorite indulgence is Mud Pie’s “Mostess” cupcake—it’s sweetly reminiscent of the well-known childhood chocolate treat.
