The Roasterie Perks Up Student Financial Situations

KC’s chief coffee company celebrates 20 years of business by donating to Midwestern colleges.

In honor of its 20th anniversary last year, The Roasterie plans to donate more than $22,000 to several Midwestern colleges and universities. The coffee company has been making donations to its college and university partners since 2009, whether by direct donation or by donating a portion of sales from coffee and products sold at those institutions. Following a highly successful 2013, The Roasterie plans to donate more funds than ever before.

University of Kansas, Johnson County Community College, University of Missouri, Iowa State University, University of Northern Iowa, University of Iowa, University of Nebraska and Central College in Pella, Iowa, will receive their portion of the $22,000 throughout the month of February.

Each college and university is allowed to spend the money at its own discretion, but traditionally, it’s used to fund scholarships for students seeking degrees in food service and the culinary arts, as well as to support students working at campus retail dining locations. KU, for instance, uses its donation to fund The Roasterie Retail Student Employee Scholarship.

Since the creation of the scholarship, “32 student-employees have been able to offset their financial need,” says Alecia Stultz, University of Kansas Dining Services assistant director of retail dining. “We value the partnership we have formed with The Roasterie and are very appreciative of its team’s dedication to the success of our student employees.”
