Recycle, Reuse, Rejoice with Country Club Plaza Lights

Even though the Christmas holiday has passed, these are thoughtful gifts that warm hearts through KC pride.

Like so many Kansas Citians, Nancy Pell, owner of the Perfect Scents shop on Main, looks forward to the Country Club Plaza lighting ceremony every Thanksgiving. But she wondered what happens to the light bulbs—all 80-plus miles of them—when they’re replaced? She obtained boxes of retired bulbs from the Plaza Association and turned them into festive ornaments ready to decorate your home or give as a keepsake of the beloved holiday celebration. The bulbs ($7.50 each) come in clear and a variety of colors, including Nancy’s favorite (red), and can be personalized with a name or short sentiment.

Her favorite story is from a woman whose daughter was picked from the crowd many years ago to flip the light switch on stage. The mom sent a Plaza light bulb to her—now grown and living in New York City—as a way to remember that Thanksgiving night so long ago. This season, the lights will go out on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014.
