Nelson-Atkins Unveils Colorful Chinese Prints in New Exhibit

Living With the Spirits, January 31st – July 20th, Gallery 222, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art announced their latest installation, a collection of Chinese festival prints to be available for viewing from January 31st-July 20th.

The brightly colored “New Year pictures” are so named because they adorn doors, windows and furniture during seasonal festivals. The prints portray deities and images of good fortune, thought to protect a traditional Chinese home.

The exhibition is an acquisition by former curator and director Laurence Sickman, who decorated his own home with the prints during his time studying in China in the 1930s. The exhibit, in Gallery 222, is free and open to the public.
