Sporting Kansas City stars trade cleats for ballet shoes

Nielsen, Sinovic and Zavagnin will appear in KC Ballet’s “The Nutcracker”

In this country, there’s no greater accomplishment for pro soccer players than winning the MLS—which our own Sporting Kansas City did last weekend in a nail-biting final at Sporting Park. So just how do you follow up after such a career coup? Well, for some players, the answer is: take up ballet.

This season’s SKC team captain, Jimmy Nielsen (who recently announced his retirement); hometown hero, defender Seth Sinovic; and assistant coach Kerry Zavagnin all have been practicing their pliés with dancers from the Kansas City Ballet in order to perform in some of the company’s productions of “The Nutcracker.”

Sinovic will take to the stage for both the matinee and evening performance on Sunday, Dec. 15, and you can catch Zavagnin’s performance on Wednesday, Dec. 18. Nielsen’s appearance, originally scheduled for Friday, Dec. 13, has been postponed and is yet to be rescheduled. (Perhaps he was superstitious about the date?)

Tickets for the performances mentioned are still available online. Click the link on the photo to select your seats.
