Christmas History: Kansas City’s Crowning Glory

A dazzling display gets a second chance.

The best holidays come with a serving of eggnog and a hearty dose of nostalgia. Many Kansas Citians will recall these majestic Christmas Crowns that festooned Downtown’s Petticoat Lane from 1962 to 1969. This postcard shows the center crown—measuring 13 feet across and 7 feet high with 621 colored lights—near the Emery-Bird-Thayer department store at 11th and Walnut.

Elements of the store still live at EBT Restaurant on State Line, and thankfully, the crowns continue their reign at Zona Rosa in Kansas City North.
