Powerhouse artist Janelle Monáe, born and raised in Kansas City, Kan., burst onto the national music scene in 2010 with her debut album The ArchAndroid, generating the hit single “Tightrope.”

Monáe’s music defies easy categorization, blending and layering many styles and references into a smart, danceable exploration of what modern pop music can be. Her sophomore full-length release The Electric Lady, released September 2013 to critical acclaim, features the single “Queen” with artist Erykah Badu (see the video below).
Monáe’s career further advanced when she joined the roster as a CoverGirl. Not only are her striking looks visible in the national advertising campaign, but her visage has graced the covers of Elle, Essence, Vibe, Bust and other national magazines.
She performs November 15 at the Uptown Theater in Kansas City.
