Who is Pellet Envy and Why Do They Keep Winning BBQ Contests?

Adding to Kansas City barbecue’s numerous titles won over the summer, last week, a local barbecue pro was crowned Grand Champion and won $50,000 on the Destination America show “BBQ Pitmasters.”

Rod Gray, a resident of Leawood, represented KC on the fourth season of the show. During the course of the two-hour finale, Gray and his wife, Sheri beat barbecue teams from Oklahoma and Oregon. The contest required the teams to cook a 135-pound pig on two pits.

Gray names pork and brisket as his specialties, so the challenge was right up his alley. His desire to compete blossomed out of his goal to show his friends that he was still competitive after a particularly tough year.

The Grays began competing as Pellet Envy in 2001 and have racked up more wins than any other team on the national circuit since 2006. They also cater, teach and promote barbecue as America’s cuisine. Their rubs and sauces are available for purchase under the EAT Barbecue label at, and EAT Barbecue products are available at all local Price Chopper locations. With the American Royal and colder weather approaching, you’ll want to stock up for your own barbecue feasts.
