Inspired by Spain, Made in Kansas City

Interior designer Alejandro Lopez found inspiration around the globe in creating his new furniture line.

The “Monaco” chair, for instance, reflects his childhood in Granada, Spain. “My mother, a very fashionable woman, had a sofa in this houndstooth fabric. I used to hide under the cushions when I was a little boy,” he says.

Mother Nature was the designer’s other muse. Lopez has a country home in northern Missouri, and likes to incorporate walnut – a tree found throughout the property – in coffee tables and a floating console. You might also find elements from nature walks in his terrariums.

Lopez also favors natural fabrics for his sofas, chairs and pillows. “I love linen’s organic texture,” he says, “and how wonderful it looks in neutrals and bright colors.” Several of the pillows are hand-painted linen.

Lopez is particularly proud that his collection – ranging in price from $119 to $4,500 — is manufactured in Kansas City. “I wanted to show off our local talent,” he says, “so each piece has a metal tag embossed with ‘Imported from Kansas City to the World.’”

The line is available at Alejandro Home Design showroom and studio, 1701 Main, Kansas City (816-421-1030) and through alejandrohomedesign.com.
