The Flatiron District is reinventing the salon experience.
Overland Park, Kan. kept coming up again and again when Chris and Jayme Brassell researched the best places to raise a family, so the New Yorkers decided to pack up and move to a place where they knew no one. The Brassells are already making a lot of friends after opening their blow dry salon, Flatiron District, in downtown Overland Park (7224 W. 79th St., Overland Park). Jayme Brassell chats about her salon.
Why did you choose to embrace the blow dry bar concept?
I missed New York. The city, but also the quirky shops and blow dry bars. I got used to being able to get my hair washed and styled for cheap, and since my hair is naturally curly, it really helped maintain my hair. [Kansas City] still doesn’t have many blow dry salons, so I thought there was definitely a need for it.
Tell me a little about how the salon works.
We don’t do cuts or color. We provide customers with a wash, blow dry and style, which they choose from a menu of styles, such as Flatiron District Signature [sleek, straight and smooth], Upper East Side [sophisticated, perfect pony] and Greenwich Village [bohemian, loose waves]. Our salon provides an extra little twist, though, because we also sell furniture, home decor, art, glassware and more.
The design of this salon is exceptional. What inspired it?
I really wanted to bring a little bit of New York to this area, but we also love Kansas as our home, so the urban farmhouse décor was important for us to incorporate. Fishs Eddy was a home décor line in New York City that I wanted to bring to the shop. The cute milk bottles that they make fit the urban farmhouse décor. I have also included a lot of farmhouse touches. We have a door from a real farmhouse that was reclaimed by someone local. I like to support small business in my own shop whenever I can.
What other products do you carry?
We like to use organic and vegan hair products. (MALIN + GOETZ) is a great product line out of New York that we use. Their deodorant is definitely a must-buy, because it does not contain any of the gross ingredients that other deodorants do, especially the ones linked to breast cancer. It helps your body reach a natural equilibrium, so the deodorant actually works better than others. We had one man, visiting from Denver, come in a buy our entire supply once, because he forgot to bring his here with him.
