It’s official – Kansas City is soccer crazy. Our readers voted Sporting KC as the City’s Best Hometown Sports Team by a wide margin. Why?
Just three years ago, Kansas City’s soccer franchise was struggling, lacking a meaningful connection to the city and its people. Now, thanks to a new stadium, a rebranding and a hardworking staff and squad, Sporting KC fever has spread like wildfire throughout the community, leaving an appreciation for soccer and a trail of SKC’s signature powder blue and deep navy in its path.
Last season’s accomplishments include an average attendance of 19,017 as well as the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Championship, securing the team’s first trophy in eight years.
Though the 2013 season has much left to play, with standout players like Graham Zusi and Matt Besler making national team appearances and a recently renewed contract for head coach Peter Vermes, SKC will surely make the city proud once more.
