Travel + Leisure has listed Mud Pie Vegan Bakery on its list of “America’s Best Bakeries.”
Mud Pie opened in February 2011 at 1615 W. 39th St. Besides making delicious baked goods and coffee drinks, owners Sharon Hughes and Michael and Ashley Valverde wanted to serve people with dietary restrictions, allergies and health concerns in the Kansas City area. Each co-owner is committed to working on a specific part of the menu to ensure the quality of their offerings. Hughes works on preparing vegan baked goods, such as breads, cupcakes and cookies. Michael has mastered the art of creating coffee concoctions and Ashley develops the gluten-free and raw menu.
Mud Pie’s rotating menu in the shop proves that living a vegan, gluten-free or raw life doesn’t have to taste bland. Consider, for example, the Mostess cupcake, a take on the Hostess cupcake—chocolate cake filled with vanilla frosting and topped with chocolate ganache and a vanilla frosting swirl. Or, enjoy a fruity pick-me-up with Mud Pie’s strawberry shortcake—vanilla cake filled with sliced strawberries and topped with vanilla frosting.
The menu also includes muffins, sweet and savory scones, cookies, biscotti, bagels, mini bundt cakes, coffee cakes, stuffed pretzels, pop tarty pie pockets, bars and candy. The usual coffee suspects grace their drink menu, along with specialty drinks, such as the Hammerhead—coffee and espresso—and the Dirty South—chicory and coffee au lait.
