A global gathering of nearly 1,000 biotech executives, researchers, entrepreneurs and academics will gather in Kansas City this month. The world health community will be listening very closely.
Nearly a thousand biotech professionals and academics will gather in Kansas City this month to celebrate the achievements of the global animal health industry and look to the future for innovative new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat disease.
WHY KANSAS CITY?
The Kansas City region is supported by the world’s largest concentration of animal health industry assets. Called the KC Animal Health Corridor, our region is the center of influence and innovation for the global animal health industry.

The Corridor is more than a collection of industry assets, however. Those assets represent a significant competitive advantage for the KC region and the growth and sustainability of our economy. A recent survey of major animal health employers across the United States identified several reasons why being located in the KC Animal Health Corridor gives them a competitive edge.
KANSAS CITY IS A PRIME LOCATION
In addition to being geographically centralized within the United States, the Corridor also is in the center of a large percentage of the animal health customer base for both livestock and companion animals. The region is centrally located near many of the leading Colleges of Veterinary Medicine. While physical location is important, the easy, cosmopolitan lifestyle in the KC area also makes a difference in workforce recruitment and retention.
THE KC ANIMAL HEALTH CORRIDOR FEATURES A TALENTED WORKFORCE
The KC Animal Health Corridor’s industry concentration makes the region a talent hub for animal health companies. With more than 300 animal health-related companies operating in the region, the Corridor workforce has a significant level of experience and expertise in animal health research, product development and commercialization.
KANSAS CITY IS SUPPORTED BY RESEARCH CONCENTRATION
The KC Animal Health Corridor is supported by a robust concentration of research assets featuring expertise along the entire research continuum. From basic genetic research being done at the Stowers Institute to applied research at MRIGlobal, plus access to more than a dozen science parks and incubators, the region can satisfy just about any research need.
Two assets in particular truly put us on the map globally as a center of animal health research:
• The KC Animal Health Corridor will be home to the National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Homeland Security. NBAF will conduct the highest level of research to prevent the spread of animal diseases.
• The KC region also is home to a unique concentration of clinical research organizations. More than 100 entities in the KC region conduct or manage clinical trials throughout the world, making the area fifth per capita in clinical trials conducted.
Located in the center of the world’s largest concentration of animal health industry assets brings with it unique business development opportunities such as acquisition opportunities, licensing deals and opportunities in translational medicine. Plus, smaller companies can gain access to global research and product development expertise.
KC ANIMAL HEALTH CORRIDOR IS A UNIQUE REGIONAL COMMITMENT
The KC Animal Health Corridor is one of the only economic development efforts in the world focused exclusively on animal health. It is an effort largely led by industry, in the form of a 13-person advisory board of some of the world’s largest and most influential animal health companies: Merck Animal Health, Nestle/Purina Pet Care, Zoetis, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Hills Pet Nutrition, Ceva Animal Health, MRIGlobal, Agri-Laboratories, Merial and Bayer Animal Health.
This year, we will host the eighth annual KC Animal Health Corridor Homecoming dinner for 750 global animal health industry executives, academia and service providers. The next day, nearly 400 attendees will hear from more than a dozen of the most promising young animal health companies at the fifth annual KC Animal Health Investment Forum, the world’s only full-day investment forum exclusively for animal health companies.
Animal health is an industry that helped build our KC region and continues to drive innovation in food safety, nutrition and disease prevention and treatment.
