Innovative trends currently causing a stir in the tech world help businesses and people foster efficiency.
Security is a hot topic in the business world. As technology becomes more accessible on multiple devices, a secure network is paramount.
“Security is a growing trend in technology. In this modern age, a company’s information can now be taken from not only hardware kept in the building, but also from any mobile devices,” Ryan Weber, president of KCnext, the technology council of greater Kansas City, says.
With more people taking their work outside the office, the sphere of protection a business puts into place must be wider. Today, knowing what security plans are available and whether or not they extend to mobile devices is of immediate concern to chief technology officers in nearly every business setting.
Technology has changed the idea of what ownership can be, which ultimately changes how consumers spend their money. Sharing economy, at its most basic definition, involves the sharing of property between numerous individuals, allowing for people to try different experiences and gain convenience without the commitment of complete, long-term ownership.
“A good example of a sharing economy is the Zipcar and how it has replaced the taxi,” Herb Sih, managing partner and co-founder of Think Big KC, says. Zipcar is a car-sharing company, which takes reservations for cars for hourly or daily rates. The amount of long-term purchases that people make is changing with the appearance of sharing economy.
On Netflix, complete seasons of television series are being released. “House of Cards” and the rebooted “Arrested Development” series have enjoyed extremely successful releases in this format, transcending the concept of how viewers engage entertainment.
“Cloud computing is huge right now, because it is cheaper than dealing with IT services yourself,” Weber says.
Cloud computing allows businesses to operate technology efficiently in a cost-effective manner. The cloud eliminates the need for as much hardware in an office, because company information can be accessed from mobile devices. Power prices also decrease after the move to the cloud is made.
Cloud computing is an excellent option for smaller businesses. In addition to cost efficiency, offsite IT services are provided by many cloud-computing platforms. This way, smaller businesses do not go without the services that in-house IT services provide. Another technology trend that keeps CTOs awake at night, cloud computing is a major step toward the future of the business world.
“Going mobile is another big trend in technology. Through websites, apps and the cloud, information can be opened anywhere on mobile devices,” Weber says.
Mobile has already changed what the concept of the workplace can be. A report can now be opened and worked on at a coffee shop. Now, meetings with clients outside the office do not have to involve massive amounts of paper to get a point across. Mobile technology offers modern workers the ability to transport information easily while improving the environment by being paperless in nature.
Increased usage and interest in mobile devices will also provoke technology companies to create better, more accurate devices, which will make taking work outside the office safer and smoother.
The Internet of Things
The Internet of Things expresses the manner in which devices interact with other devices.
“The Internet of Things is becoming more and more popular. It’s the concept of machines interacting with other machines,” Sih says. “For example, think about how a thermostat can be controlled by a mobile device.”
We have seen television commercials or futuristic movies where a house is controlled entirely by a mobile device. Those devices can now turn on house lights, open front doors and adjust the aforementioned thermostat. The Internet of Things provides greater efficiency in everyday life, especially in the fast-paced world where these simple things can be forgotten. A door can easily be unlocked for a child, who forgot their key and is returning home from school, without stress or worry.
The Internet of Things also has the potential to work in other fields to create life-altering changes in current systems. For example, a patient in a hospital could receive specialized care from a doctor hundreds of miles away through the exchange of information between devices.
