The Style Guru: Lingerie

Lingerie is sexy, sophisticated and sultry–not scary!

Intimidated? Take a deep breath. Look at yourself with absolutely no judgment at all. Lingerie can be a touchy subject. Yes, we all want it. No, not all of us might have the patience to shop for it.

Ladies, we were all made uniquely for a reason. Capture your essence that you were born with. When you are wearing properly fitting undergarments underneath your everyday “ho-hums,” your spirits are lifted all day long. Trust me on this. It gives you a little extra confidence to carry and a reason to smile to yourself throughout the day.

Local lingerie loves that I venture toward when I need a good fitting:

  • Clair de Lune: They carry lines like Elle Macpherson, OnGossamer, Goddess, Chantelle and Cake, just to name a few.
  • Birdies: They have an extensive line of European delicates including Huit, Lola Haze, Candi Factory, Little Bra Company and other hidden treasures!
Notice that I keep emphasizing proper fit. These pretty little delicates can pack a punch against gravity, lifting, smoothing and forming to perfection. Here’s to to fight gravity for your own personal style:

If you have a full bust…

… Bras with sturdy cups will add the shaping and support you need. To make sure you get the right fit, check your silhouette. When you turn to the side, the nipples should settle halfway between the shoulder and elbow if the bra is supporting you enough.

If you have uneven breasts…

… Padding that can be taken out when needed is a must. Invest in a bra that allows you to level out your imbalances, and adjust the strap length to accommodate the fix.

If you have an average figure…

…My stance on this is to embrace what Mother Nature gave you. If you don’t have any extraordinarily challenging attributes, there are tons of bra options to choose from. A low-cut pushup will do the trick. Have fun with the look and feel of it– go modern, consider patterns, play with lace. Choose something you settle comfortably with.

If you’re plus size…

…A bra with wide bands will prevent your back from aching and is better for all-day support. I suggest the brand Goddess (available at Clair de Lune). It has fuller cup sizes and wide bands, so you won’t have to layer on much of anything else.

If you have sagging breasts…

…You’re likely making the most common cardinal bra mistake: The band is too high on the back of the spine, so the breasts ride down. Correct this by wearing a cup size that is fuller. You’ll instantly perk up!

If you have a small chest…

…Select a brand that has scaled down the cup size in order to accommodate a smaller frame size. The band should be snug on the midline of the back, and a bit of padding should naturally push up your smaller frame. I suggest buying from The Little Bra Company.

Be happy! Be confident in your skin!
