Ideas come and go for everyone in every corner of business. Sustainable ventures don’t often come out of them, especially when they stem from a short chat with a neighbor. Levi Knox heard about staining concrete, started doing research and decided to attend a three-day seminar in Florida. That was all he needed to start Sub Q Artistic Concrete in 2007 at age 26, but that didn’t guarantee smooth sailing. He handed out 500 brochures during his final weeks at Gail’s Harley Davidson and then took concurrent jobs at the post office, as a pizza delivery driver and as a car salesman.
“I didn’t want to work for anyone anymore,” Knox says. “I learned ownership on the fly and relied on busting my butt. I was so fired up that I think enthusiasm got me a lot of customers.” He realized the best path was to bid on commercial jobs online but wasn’t landing deals, so he followed up with Miller-Stauch Construction. They were impressed with his initiative and gave him his first major deal. In 2009, he brought on long-time friend Johnny Nava as a partner to provide experience gained from more than 20 years in roofing.
Since then, there’s been more business than they can handle. They provide services for every kind of concrete flooring but specialize in artistic floors that turn heads, which they turned into more than $500,000 last year.
