There isn’t a single generation that hasn’t had the opportunity to fall in love with Ed Asner, the KCK native turned TV icon. He portrayed the gruff Lou Grant on the “Mary Tyler Moore” show, then went on to shine on screen for “Hawaii Five-O” and “Thunder Alley.” Younger audiences couldn’t help but adore him as Carl Frederickson, the apathetic widower in Pixar’s “Up,” and as Santa Claus in “Elf” with Will Ferrell. Asner has won more Emmys for his performances than any other male actor and is one of the most highly sought-after voice actors in the world. His rough-around-the-edges charisma keeps us charmed (and laughing) on and off the set.
Kansas City is known for its fabulous barbeque, but what many people don’t know is just how many famous male celebrities hail from the area. Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt needs no introduction. Ed Asner, star of the ‘Mary Tyler Moore’ show, Oscar winner Chris Cooper, ‘Desperate Housewives star Tuc Watkins, and comedy star Paul Rudd are all KC natives.
KC is well represented in the sports world by 8 time major winner Tom Watson and the Kansas City Chiefs’ Brandon Flowers. Renowned designer Hal Swanson, sculptor Tom Corbin and photographer Greg Gorman are all from KC too. Legendary jazz performer Bobby Watson is also from KC.
